Looking for a substitute for canned cream of soups? You've found it! So quick and easy to make right on your stove.
Is Canned Cream of Soup Harmful
The canned stuff is typically loaded with fat and excess sodium. Check your labels. I have often seen, modified food starch, which is a processed ingredient that helps thicken up the soup. They also often include vegetable oil, sugar, and flavoring. Flavoring basically means something has been added to alter the natural flavor.
How to Make Cream of Chicken Soup
- Add chicken broth to a saucepan on medium-high heat. Bring to a boil.
- Combine flour, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, poultry seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste. Stir.
- Slowly add the mixture to the pot with the broth. Stir.
- Lower the heat to medium-low and cook until the mixture thickens.

Never once did I think I could make my own cream of chicken soup instead of buying canned. It was so easy! I added mushrooms to make it cream of mushroom to use in my green bean casserole for Thanksgiving and I’m very happy that there’ll be leftover soup!

Yay! Yes, it's interesting to see how easy it is!

I've been wanting to get away from canned soups like this but couldn't find an easy recipe until I stumbled on this one! So easy, so much 'fresher' tasting, and it makes me feel more accomplished knowing I didn't just dump a can of unknown junk into my food! Thanks so much!

I cut the recipe into thirds because I don’t have a way of storing the extra yet, and wanted to try an alternative to the canned cream of chicken soup in my chicken pot pie. It worked perfectly and tasted so good! Love finding recipes that allow me to eliminate processed/canned/prepackaged foods!
staysnatched says
Awesome. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

So excited to have one less type of can in my cabinet. I don’t need that cream of anything when I can use this easy and fabulous recipe. And freezing the leftovers saves so much time.

Needed to make this for the dressing recipe. Followed the directions above and it came out better than the canned stuff. Flavorful and I know exactly what I put in it.
staysnatched says
Yes! I love that about home made.

Saved this recipe as it sounds so easy and flavoursome. I Have always made my own soup but with actual vegetables. I.E pumpkin, zucchini, mushroom etc. Is this ok to put left over chicken that has been cooked and separated into thin strips to add some texture to the soup.?
staysnatched says
Sure, if you want. I have never tried it.
Netta says
Hi I was wondering if I am able to use any type of milk like Lactaid or can cooking milk?
staysnatched says
I’ve never used those. I don’t have any allergies. If you test it, let me know!
Tiana says
@Netta, I used lactose free milk and it worked great!
staysnatched says
Glad to hear it!
Valeigh says
Is this equivalent to a canned ‘concentrated’ cream of chicken soup? Hope that makes sense lol.
staysnatched says
If you're using a dish with cream of chicken soup, then yes.
Barbara says
I was so anxious to try this recipe, bui I was disappointed. Mine was not the golden/yellow color of the canned chicken broth you get in the USA. I used home made broth, so it turned out grey, with flecks of poultry spice. I used white pepper to avoid specks as yours looked clean. Flavor was too strong on the poultry spice, and I could taste the flour. I can't feed this to my family, so I've wasted my money as well as my time.
staysnatched says
It shouldn't look like the processed canned cream of soups. This is made using real food ingredients. You also used homemade broth, that definitely contributed to your results and coloring. If you can taste the flour it's because you didn't properly stir and blend the soup. You also could have used old and expired flour. Check the shelf life on the ingredients you used in the recipe.
Catherine says
Love this recipe! I usually don’t have poultry seasoning on hand so I substitute a Spanish chicken seasoning and it always comes out great. Is this something you would recommend freezing?
staysnatched says
I've never done it. I freeze soup all of the time, so I assume it's fine.
Melanie says
Can you use heavy cream in lieu of milk?
staysnatched says
You probably can. I have not tested it.
Jess says
@Melanie,
Did you try this? Does it work? I am out of milk and would need to use heavy cream as well.
Connie says
I have not tried this recipe but do you have any suggestions for a flour substitute? This sounds amazing!
staysnatched says
I don't. You can use whatever you normally use to thicken sauces.
Courtney says
I use this recipe all the time, especially when I make cheesy potatoes and green bean casserole! I've made this using the ingredients it calls for and have also made it with gluten-free flour and almond milk and it still tastes just as good!
staysnatched says
Wonderful! Thanks for sharing that!
Valarie says
Absolutely delicious! Made for a recipe but slurped so much of it by itself. Thank you!

MSG (monosodium glutamate) is a major migraine trigger which I'm allergic to (and Campbell's soup is full of it) so I was so glad to find your recipe.
staysnatched says
I am, too! Glad to hear it.
Hiday says
Where did you get your mason jar? I have never seen ones like that and would love to buy some. Oh and this recipe is 🔥🔥🔥. It's the only one I use.
staysnatched says
I've had it for 6 years. It's Ball brand. I'm so glad you enjoy the recipe!
Esther says
Can you tell me what's in your poultry seasoning please (the link doesn't work for me)? I'm in the UK and we have lots of different flavours of chicken seasoning so I'm not sure what to use. Thanks
staysnatched says
THYME, SAGE, MARJORAM, ROSEMARY, BLACK PEPPER, AND NUTMEG.
Any chicken seasoning will work.
Karen says
Creamy deliciousness
staysnatched says
So glad to hear it!
Cheryl says
I made this the other night and it got tons of lumps. What did I do wrong? I ended up putting it through a sieve and it worked and tasted great but it was a big pain.
staysnatched says
You didn't stir it enough or your heat was too high or you added the mixture too quickly during the step when it says to add it slowly.
Lisa says
Can you use broth from a roasted chicken?
staysnatched says
Yes. Any broth.
Linda says
I was going to buy condensed soup from the store, but the ingredients were so bad, there was no way I was going to give that crap to my family. This was a very easy and fast recipe to make, and it was nice and thick, just the way I needed it to be
staysnatched says
Yay! So glad you enjoyed it.
