It can be really frustrating to search for a ranch dressing that is low-sugar. So why not make your own?
Everyone loves a nice ranch dressing. It's a popular creamy salad dressing and dip that originated in the United States. It's often used as a topping for salads, as a dip for vegetables, chips, and wings, and as a sauce for burgers, sandwiches, and wraps. It has a tangy, slightly sweet, and savory flavor that is often described as cool and refreshing.
You will likely love my Homemade Ranch Seasoning, too!
Why Make Your Own Dressing
- You can control the ingredients, it's customizable: When you make your own ranch dressing, you can control the quality and quantity of the ingredients you use. This means you can choose to use fresh herbs and spices, high-quality oils, and healthier ingredients like Greek yogurt. You can also adjust the seasoning to your liking and avoid using any preservatives or additives.
- It is healthier: Store-bought ranch dressing is often high in unhealthy fats, sugar, and sodium.
- It is cheaper: Homemade is much cheaper to make than store-bought. You can save money by buying the ingredients in bulk (hello Costco!).
- It is fresher: Store-bought ranch dressing can sit on the shelf for months, while homemade is made fresh and used within a few days.
Key Ingredients
- Sour Cream or Plain Greek Yogurt
- Mayo
- Heavy Whipping Cream
- Chives
- Dill
- Fresh Lemon Juice
- Garlic Powder
- Salt and Pepper
How to Store It/How Long It Will Last
The dressing should always be refrigerated to prevent bacterial growth and spoilage. Store it in an airtight container or jar and keep it in the refrigerator for up to one week. Shake or stir before use. Over time, the ingredients in ranch dressing may separate, so be sure to shake or stir the dressing well before using it to ensure a consistent texture and flavor.
Freezer Tips
You can freeze it in an airtight container for up to three months. However, keep in mind that the texture may change slightly after thawing, so it's best to use frozen ranch dressing for cooking or as a dip rather than as a salad dressing.
Recipe Tips
Play around with the ingredients some. I found this to be the perfect combination for me, but you may want something a little different. Try adding ½ of the suggested serving for each of the spices. Taste the dressing and adjust from there. This is what I do when I experiment and compile a recipe. You can always add more, but it’s much more difficult to unwind what is already done.
Pair it with Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Wings.

It's listed at the top of the post.

Hi,
Could please consider including the nutritional information with the recipe itself so it's there when you print it out. As well, how big is the serving size that the nutritional info is for?
Thank you
staysnatched says
Hi. Nutrition value is per serving. The recipe notes 10 servings.
Monica kersten says
@staysnatched, how much is one serving?
Jennifer Walsh says
How long can this last
staysnatched says
I've done a week, it didn't last long in my house!
Victoria Williams says
Hello,
How much olive oil, please?
staysnatched says
Hi there! Thanks for catching this. There is no olive oil used in the recipe. I have removed that.
Rob says
Very good. Didn't have chives so used red onion. Also did have heavy wiping cream so I used Greek yogurt. Turned out awesome! Love it. Thanks for the recipe.
staysnatched says
I'm glad you enjoyed the recipe!
Ellen says
What kind of mayo do you use in this dressing? I'm trying to avoid soybean, canola, & vegetable oils.
staysnatched says
Trader Joe's brand.
VERONICA says
Excellent!

Can you freeze this?
staysnatched says
Yes you can.
Patty says
This was so much better than expected! I don't like fat free or low calorie ranch dressing. And this taste far better than those! One question though. You mention there are 10 servings but how much is each serving size? I'm not seeing it listed anywhere.
staysnatched says
Hi there. I didn't weigh each serving. I divide them equally.
Deb says
This was amazing! Easy to prepare too! We loved the flavor. One question: What is a serving size? Need to know to count carbs.
staysnatched says
The recipe provides 10 servings.
Teresa Evans says
@Deb,
Teresa Evans says
@staysnatched, For those who have asked, the total recipe makes 1/2 cup. 1/2 cup = 8 Tablespoons. 8 Tablespoons ÷ 10 servings = .8 Tablespoons = 1 serving
Mimi says
@Teresa Evans, Thank you!!!
Paula Brubaker says
@Teresa Evans, Just looking at the recioe posting ed, it looks like the total volume is 1 1/4 cup which would be good 10 oz approximately. At 10 servings, it seems that a serving would be 1 oz (=2 Tbsp). Dies that sound correct?
Paula Brubaker says
@Mimi, sorry for all the typos. Thought I had checked the spellings before sending my reply.
Carole says
Love this recipe!

Amy says
This recipe turned out great! For the Keto folks, I used Chosen Foods’ Avocado Oil Mayo (I found it at my local Publix in the condiments section), regular Kroger brand sour cream, and regular Land O Lakes Heavy Whipping Cream.
I used the nutritional info on the labels to come up with the below stats per one ounce:
125 calories
0.8g carbs
13.31g fat
0.4g protein
Only the sour cream had any sugar, but it was minimal. I’m sure with a fancier, organic something brand you could find a better quality sour cream and whipping cream.
Cheers! Thank you for the recipe, it tastes fantastic!
staysnatched says
So glad you enjoyed the recipe!

Hi I didn’t try the recipe yet but I will. I’m wondering how to get your air fryer cookbook

staysnatched says
I do a week.
Lizz West says
I didn't have dried dill or chives, but I did have fresh dill pickles and so I used 2 tsp of the juice. I also replaced the heavy whipping cream for coconut cream. All in all it tastes delicious! The coconut cream isn't even tasted in the dressing. I can't wait to use it on my salad ????????
staysnatched says
I love your substitution tips!
Tonya Smith says
I used Chosen Foods Avocado Oil Mayo and daisy sour cream. Now only 1 carb per serving.
Tonya Smith says
I just made this with the avocado mayo and daisy sour cream.. it is delish!! I measured the total and it is one ounce per serving.
staysnatched says
That sounds great!
Nikki says
Can you recommend a substitute for mayo? Would more sour cream and hwc work?
staysnatched says
Sour cream sounds like a good option. I can’t say that it will work, as I have not personally tested it with this recipe. You will have to test it out.
Jessa says
Just made this with avocado mayo, and used 1 teaspoon white vinegar plus 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice because I love a tangy dressing. Holy smokes, delish!! I'm so grateful I can stop looking at the $7/bottle "clean" ranch dressing options and just use this instead! Sooo easy. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!
staysnatched says
You're welcome! I love the lemon juice idea!
Orvina says
Love this! Rich and creamy, very flavorful. I’ve made it twice!
staysnatched says
So glad you enjoyed it!
Brenda says

How long will it last in the fridge?
staysnatched says
A week.
Brenda Vinson says
I loved this. I was looking for a low carb dressing while I was doing the Keto menu. I like it better than store bought, and I know what's in it!!
Thank you!
staysnatched says
Wonderful! That's what I love about it, too!
Pat Marino says
Delicious thank you Pat

I'm so glad you enjoyed!
Orvina says
I’ve made this recipe just as it is and it’s fantastic!! I’m currently trying to add more protein to my foods so I was looking for a Greek Yogurt Ranch but couldn’t find any. So I decided to try out this but sub the sour cream for plain Greek Yogurt! I also omitted the mayo and it’s still soooooo yummy!!! Tastes just like the original version but with less fat/cals and more protein for anyone who would rather make their own Greek Yogurt Ranch.
staysnatched says
Thanks for sharing your tips!
Libby Lasley says
So creamy and delicious! I didn’t have chives so I threw some parsley in instead. Not the same flavor chives would give, but delicious nonetheless. Thanks for a great recipe!

Growing up on those diy brand name dressing packets, I didn’t think I needed a recipe for ranch! But after you start reading those labels, you’ll start searching to make everything homemade! This ranch is incredible. Better than any bottled or restaurant dressing. It’s so flavorful and easy to throw together in a small or large batches. Once you start using this homemade ranch, you won’t be able to go back - and that’s a good problem to have! I’ve also used this dressing to marinate chicken before grilling and it was perfect.
staysnatched says
Yay! I'm so glad you think so.
Shelley H says
Absolutely love this dressing 😁

This recipe was perfect! It went great with Brandi’s air fryer Buffalo wings. For anyone trying to make it dairy free, I subbed in Forager dairy free sour cream and used almond milk instead of the cream and it worked out great!! Thanks for another awesome recipe 🙂
staysnatched says
Such a great pairing! Glad you enjoyed it.
Jim Wilson says
Love it, and make all the time. I have made original recipe many times. I now sub Greek yogurt for sour cream, fresh garlic and green onion with tops cut very fine, a sprinkle of chipotle seasoning and today I added a touch of Parmesan. 👍
staysnatched says
Wonderful! I love that idea.
Nicole says
I will never buy a store one!! This is Devine! Thank you for sharing this !!
staysnatched says
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Tiffani says
OMG Brandi!!!! This is better than any bottled ranch. Just putting in the leftover seasoning from the ranch potatoes (and I halved this recipe), it was so good. I’m so glad I don’t ever have to buy ranch again and I don’t have to worry about wasting these other ingredients I buy all of the time.
staysnatched says
Haha! Yay! Glad you enjoyed it.
Kristal De La Paz says
Never buying ranch again!! I paired the salad dressing with Brandi’s air fryer Parmesan chicken tenders and it was amazing!
staysnatched says
haha! I love to hear it.
Nek C says
Hubby and I was making different flavored wings and thought they’d go great with ranch. Originally we were going to use store bought ranch, buuuut we didn’t have any. I knew Brandi would have something for us and she didn’t disappoint (but when does she ever?). Had all the ingredients on hand except the heavy whipping cream, and the ranch was still banging. Better yet, this ranch was better than any store bought ranch. It was fresh and didn’t last AT ALL. We used it up. 🤣 I’m extremely picky with ranch, and I’m thankful that I found one that works.
staysnatched says
I'm so glad it worked!
Felicia says
Ok. First let me say that I was not a ranch dressing fan. Most store bought ranch has a wired taste to me, probably the preservatives or something. The only ranch I cared for that was from the store is Primal Kitchen. But then I saw Brandi had this Southwest salad with a chipotle ranch dressing so I was intrigued.
This ranch dressing is by far the best ranch I’ve had. No fake ingredients and it tastes great! I used it to make the chipotle ranch but we also used it as veggie dip too.
staysnatched says
I love all of these ideas!
Anna says
I love homemade ranch and will never buy from any store again!
staysnatched says
I'm so glad to hear it!
