What Type of Cider to Use
Real unfiltered apple cider works best. If you want homemade, check out my Caramel Apple Cider recipe.
Unfiltered apple cider is made from fresh-pressed apples and retains more of the natural flavors, aromas, and nutrients compared to clear, filtered apple juice. This type of cider often has a slightly cloudy appearance due to the presence of apple solids.
Opt for apple cider that has minimal additional ingredients. The best apple cider should have just one ingredient: apples. Apple cider is a central component of your hot toddy’s flavor, so investing in a good-quality cider can significantly enhance your drink’s taste.
What Type of Liquor to Use
You’ll want to choose a bourbon that complements the flavors of the apple cider while adding its own unique characteristics. Here are a few types of bourbon that work well:
- Traditional Bourbon: A classic choice, traditional bourbons are known for their caramel, vanilla, and oak flavors. These flavors can add depth and richness to the apple cider without overpowering it.
- Spiced Bourbon: Some bourbons are infused with spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. These spiced bourbons can enhance the warming and cozy qualities.
- Honey Bourbon: Bourbon with honey notes can add a touch of sweetness that pairs nicely with the natural sweetness of apple cider.
- Caramel or Butterscotch Bourbon: These types of bourbons can bring out the caramelized and toasty notes, creating a dessert-like quality in the cocktail.
- Maple Bourbon: Maple-infused bourbon can add a rich, maple syrup-like sweetness to the drink, making it the perfect treat for fall.
Liquor Substitutions
You can use whatever you like in the recipe. You can also make this a mocktail without adding any alcohol. Here are some options:
- Rum: Dark or spiced rum can add a sweet and slightly caramelized flavor. This is a great choice if you prefer a sweeter and more mellow taste.
- Brandy/Cognac: Brandy has a smooth and fruity character that can work well. It provides a slightly different profile compared to whiskey or rum.
- Tequila: For a unique twist you can use tequila. This option will introduce a subtle agave flavor and a hint of earthiness.

Substitution Ideas and Add-Ins
- Cloves: Cloves offer a rich, slightly sweet, and aromatic flavor. A few cloves can go a long way in adding depth to the drink.
- Star Anise: Star anise has a unique licorice-like flavor that can add a touch of complexity to your hot toddy. Use it sparingly, as its flavor can be strong.
- Nutmeg: A pinch of freshly grated nutmeg can provide a warm, nutty aroma that complements the other spices and the apple cider.
- Allspice: Allspice has flavors reminiscent of cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg combined. It can add a warm and spicy undertone.
- Cardamom: Cardamom has a fragrant and slightly citrusy flavor that can add an interesting twist.
- Ginger: Freshly grated ginger or a slice of ginger can give your hot toddy a gentle, warming kick.
- Vanilla Extract: Can infuse a subtle vanilla flavor that pairs well with the apple.
How to Store/How Long it Will Last
Allow the drink to cool down to room temperature before storing it. Transfer the leftover hot toddy to an airtight container. Glass jars or containers with lids work well. Ideally, consume the leftovers within 1 to 2 days for the best flavor and quality.
